The Defence Preparatory Training Academy (Defence Academy) is an academy based at Ottapalam in Palakkad district that aims to impart training to youngsters who aspire to join the armed forces, para-military forces and other uniformed services as officers. The academy has been promoted with a view to creating an awareness among educated youth about the exciting career opportunities available in the various armed forces as officers. The academy has been promoted by Lt. Col. Chandrasekharan (Rtd) and Col. Ramakrishnan (Rtd). Lt. Col. Chandrasekharan has served in the Maratha Light Infantry with distinction for over 30 years and has also seen action in the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars. Col. Ramakrishnan (Rtd) has served the Indian Army for 33 years in the Regiment of Artillery. He is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington and has instructional experience in the School of Artillery, Deovalali (Nasik). He has also commanded a field regiment and has seen action in 1971 Indo-Pak war.
The core strength of the academy is the facility and expertise to provide specialised training for Services Selection Board (SSB) for recruitment as officers to the various armed forces. The SSB process is a mandatory one for selection as an officer, and the academy has the experienced personnel and necessary infrastructure like full-fledged obstacle course etc., for imparting SSB training. The academy has dedicated persons as Group Testing Officer (GTO) and psychologist. The SSB training is one of the main strengths of the academy.
Yet another special feature of this academy is the training programmes for commission of women in the armed forces and in the military nursing service.
